You can download the Switzerland country map from here. Switzerland is a federal republic made up of 26 cantons, whose federal authorities are based in Bern. It has four main linguistic and cultural areas: German, French, Italian, and Romansh.
This country is situated at the confluence of Western, Central, and Southern Europe. It is bordered by Italy in the south, France in the west, Germany in the north, and Austria and Liechtenstein in the east.
Switzerland’s small size – its total area is roughly half that of Scotland – and its small population gives little indication of its international importance. The country has a population of 8.7 million.

Switzerland is known for its mountains (particularly the Alps), chocolate, cheese, watches, banks, and neutrality. It is also home to a number of international organizations such as the United Nations and the International Olympic Committee.
Switzerland has its origins in the Old Swiss Confederacy, established in the late Middle Ages, following a series of military successes against Austria and Burgundy; The Federal Charter of 1291 is considered to be the founding document of the country.
Swiss independence from the Holy Roman Empire was formally recognized in 1648 in the Peace of Westphalia.
Switzerland was formed in 1291 by an alliance of cantons against the Habsburg dynasty – the Confederation Helvetica (or Swiss Confederation), from which Switzerland’s abbreviation CH derives – although it was only in 1848 when a new constitution was adopted that the present nation was constituted. Prior to 1848, internecine strife was quite common.
