The district is named after Azam Khan, who founded it on the ruins of Ailwal Azmat Khan village. Due to the flow of the Ghaghra River, its geography is flat plain and its climate is humid.
There are 22 development blocks in the district, which include Ahiraula, Atraulia, Ajmatgarh, Bilariaganj, Haraiya and Jahanaganj. Azamgarh is also known for its cultural activities, folk dances, festivals, and tradition of use of the Bhojpuri language.
Although the industrial base is not very strong, the agricultural base of the district is good, with crops such as rice, wheat, and sugarcane grown in the region.

Azamgarh is a city in the Indian state of Uttar Pradesh and the headquarters of the Azamgarh division, which comprises the districts of Ballia, Mau, and Azamgarh.
It is situated on the banks of river Tamsa and is located 268 km east of the state capital Lucknow and 809 km from the national capital Delhi.
