Central Asia Map - Summary
Central Asia refers to a region in Asia that includes Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, and Uzbekistan. Collectively known as the “-stans” due to their names ending with the Persian suffix “-stan,” which translates to ‘land,’ this region is characterized by its rich cultural and historical significance. Geographically, it is nestled between the Caspian Sea to the southwest, European Russia to the northwest, China and Mongolia to the east, and Afghanistan and Iran to the south, with Siberia lying to the north.
The esteemed geographer Alexander von Humboldt notably introduced the concept of Central Asia as a distinct geographical area. However, its borders remain a topic of considerable debate, with various interpretations depending on political, geographical, and cultural factors. Humboldt defined Central Asia as the land between 5° North and 5° South of the latitude line at 44.5°N.
