Chilika lake in India Map - Summary
Chilika Lake is a significant lake and lagoon located in the state of Odisha in eastern India. It is bordered by a narrow spit that separates it from the Bay of Bengal.
As one of the largest saltwater lakes in India, Chilika stretches approximately 40 miles (65 km) in length, with a width ranging from 5 to 13 miles (8 to 20 km) and a depth of about 6 feet (2 meters). The lake is primarily nourished by the Daya and Bhargavi rivers, except during the dry season from December to June, when saline water from the ocean flows in through a narrow channel. Historically, Chilika was part of the ocean until it became silted due to strong tidal actions during the summer monsoon.
