The city is situated between the rivers Ganga and Yamuna and is named after Babu Fateh Chandra, who helped Rani Lakshmi Bai in the freedom struggle. It is located 120 km south of the state capital Lucknow.
The district has a rich history, with evidence of human habitation dating back to the Vedic era. The district was part of the Vatsa mahajanapada, one of the sixteen mahajanapadas described in the Buddhist literature.
The district is influenced by Avadhi culture in the northern region and Bundelkhand culture in the southern part and is known for its traditional singing, devotional acts, and dilemmas.
Fatehpur district is a part of the I.T. revolution, with several important I.T. projects being implemented in the district. The district has five Vidhan Sabha constituencies, namely Ayah Shah, Bindki, Fatehpur, Husainganj, Jahanabad, and Khaga, and is a part of the Fatehpur (Lok Sabha constituency). The district headquarters, Fatehpur, is a Class II city, with a population of 109,645 (2011 Census)
