Malwa Plateau in India Map - Summary
Malwa is a historical province and physiographic region located in west-central India, encompassing a significant portion of western and central Madhya Pradesh, along with parts of southeastern Rajasthan and northern Maharashtra. The term specifically refers to the hilly plateau bordered by the Vindhya Range to the south, although it has been broadened to include the Narmada River valley and the Satpura Range to the south.
Historically known as a region of abundance, Malwa features fertile black soil and is traversed by the Chambal, Sipra, Kali Sindh, and Parbati rivers. The landscape consists of savanna-type vegetation on the plateau, while the southern areas are characterized by moist deciduous forests, particularly on the foothills of the Vindhya and Satpura ranges. Teak is a key commercial tree in this region. Additionally, the area is rich in natural resources, including lac (used for shellac production), materials for dyeing and tanning, gums, fruits, sabai grass (a valuable fiber plant), and honey.
