Paradeep in India Map - Summary

Paradeep, also known as Paradip, is a significant industrial seaport town in Odisha, India, located around 80 km from Cuttack city in the Jagatsinghpur district. It has evolved into a major industrial hub with prominent companies like IFFCO, Indian Oil Corporation, Bharat Petroleum, and Paradeep Phosphates Limited contributing to its growth. The nearest commercial airport is the Biju Patnaik International Airport.

Key Features of Paradeep Municipality
Paradeep Municipality, constituted in 1979 and upgraded in 2002, includes five revenue villages: Udachandrapur, Chauliapalanda, Sandhakuda, Bijayachandrapur, and Bhitaragarh. To accommodate increasing industrialization and population, a proposal in 2007 suggested expanding the municipality to include 15 surrounding villages, such as Udayabata, Nimidiha, and Nua Sandhakud.

Historical Importance of Paradeep

  1. Early Connectivity: In the 17th century, Paradeep was connected to Cuttack via the Mahanadi River, serving as a vital transport route for goods. However, these routes were abandoned over time due to silting.
  2. British Era Development: The British built a harbor named False Point in 1819, which became crucial during the 1866 famine as an entry point for food supplies.

Development of Paradeep Port

  • Initial Steps: A minor port was set up in 1958 by the Odisha government.
  • Major Port Establishment: On 3 January 1962, Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru laid the foundation stone for Paradip Port, marking a major milestone. It became operational in 1965 and was officially opened on 12 March 1966, later declared India’s eighth major port.
  • Significance: As the first deep-sea port on India’s east coast post-independence, Paradip Port remains vital for trade and industrial growth in the region.
