The Thar Desert ranks as the 17th largest desert globally and is recognized as the 9th largest subtropical desert. Approximately 85 percent of this desert is situated in India, while the remaining 15 percent is found in Pakistan. Within India, over 60 percent of the Thar Desert is located in the state of Rajasthan, from which it extends into the states of Gujarat, Punjab, and Haryana. In Pakistan, it occupies areas in the provinces of Sindh and Punjab.
