Gir Somnath is a district of Gujarat, India. It is located on the southern corner of the Kathiawar peninsula with its headquarters at the city of Somnath. Somnath is a magnificent temple located along the coastline in Prabhas Patan, Veraval, Saurashtra region of Gujarat. One of the 12 holy Jyotirlings of Lord Shiva is here in Somnath.
Somnath temple is also mentioned in the chapter 13 of Shiva Purana. The temple was reconstructed several times in the past after repeated destruction by multiple Muslim invaders and rulers, notably starting with an attack by Mahmud Ghazni in the 11th century.
Gir Somnath district was carved out from Junagadh district as one of the new seven district in August 2013. Head quarter of the district is at Veraval. Gir Somnath district is located in Saurashtra region of Gujarat and surrounded by the Arabian sea to its south.
