The name of the district has been taken from its headquarters Sirsa. It is said to be one of the oldest places in North India and its old name was Sairishaka, which finds say in Mahabharata, Panini’s ‘Ashtadhyayi’, and the Buddhist text ‘Divyavadan’.
It must have been a flourishing city within the 5th century B.C. because it has been specified by Panini. There are a number of legends around the root of the name of the town.
The Sirsa district shares borders in the north and northeast of Faridkot and Bathinda of Punjab, in the west and south of Ganga Nagar district of Rajasthan, and in the east of Hisar district.
