It is situated at the confluence of the Ganges and Yamuna rivers, about 65 miles (100 km) west-northwest of Varanasi. The city’s geographical coordinates are 25.45°N 81.84°E, and it stands at an elevation of 98 meters (322 ft) above sea level.

The city covers an area of 365 km2 (141 sq mi) and is part of the larger Prayagraj district, which has a total geographical area of 5482 sq. km and is divided into 8 tehsils, 20 development blocks, and 2802 populated villages.
