British Indian Ocean Territory Map shows the six island groups and Diego Garcia Island that make up this UK territory in the Indian Ocean.

British Indian Ocean Territory (BIOT) is a British Overseas Territory located in the Indian Ocean. It is comprised of a group of islands, counting the Chagos Archipelago, which is made up of more than 50 coral atolls and islands, with a total land region of around 60 square kilometers.

The region is located approximately midway between Africa and Indonesia and is found to the south of the Maldives. The islands are uninhabited but for military personnel and contractors who work on the islands.

The history of BIOT is closely connected to the history of the Chagos Archipelago. The islands were first discovered by Portuguese pilgrims in the 16th century and were afterward colonized by the French in the 18th century. The British took control of the islands in the 19th century, and they were afterward consolidated into the British colony of Mauritius in 1814.

In 1965, the UK purchased the Chagos Archipelago from Mauritius for £3 million, and in 1971, all of the islanders were persuasively removed by the British government to make way for a US military base on the island of Diego Garcia.

Nowadays, the British Indian Ocean Territory is managed by a commissioner who is appointed by the Queen, with the help of a small group of respectful servants. The region has no changeless civilian populace, but there are around 3,000 military personnel and contractors who live and work on the island of Diego Garcia.

The US military base on Diego Garcia is deliberately important to the US military, as it is utilized as a coordination center and arranging area for military operations in the Center East and Asia. The base is domestic to a runway, a seaport, and a number of military offices, counting barracks, a hospital, and a communications center.

The economy of BIOT is intensely dependent on the military base, with the lion’s share of the territory’s GDP coming from the arrangement of products and administrations to the US military. There is no tourism industry on the islands due to the military nearness, and access to the islands is entirely controlled.

The legal status of the Chagos Archipelago remains a petulant issue, with Mauritius claiming sovereignty over the islands and contending that the forced removal of the islanders was unlawful beneath worldwide law. The issue is as of now being considered by the International Court of Justice.

British Indian Ocean Territory is a small, inaccessible island domain located in the Indian Ocean, with a strategic military base and no lasting civilian populace. The territory’s history is checked by discussion and the constrained expulsion of the innate populace, and its legal status remains a matter of dispute.
