The Chenab Rail Bridge, spanning the Chenab River and positioned between Katra and Sangaldan along the Jammu-Baramulla line, was constructed at an impressive cost of approximately Rs 1,400 crore. It is the highest arch bridge in the world, with a deck height of 359 meters from the riverbed — making it 35 meters taller than Paris’s iconic Eiffel Tower.
The project was managed by the Konkan Railway Corporation, a branch of Indian Railways. A collaborative effort for the design and construction was executed by Afcons Infrastructure, the Ultra Construction & Engineering Company of South Korea, and VSL India. The foundation protection design was crafted by the Indian Institute of Science in Bangalore. Slope stability analysis was conducted by IIT Delhi, while seismic evaluations were tackled by both IIT Delhi and IIT Roorkee. Additionally, the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) contributed expertise to ensure the bridge could withstand blasts.
