North America is a continent situated in the Northern Hemisphere and the Western Hemisphere, and it is the third-largest landmass on Earth. It is bordered by the Arctic Ocean to the north, the Atlantic Ocean to the east, the Pacific Ocean to the west, and South America to the south. North America is home to some of the world’s most varied and interesting physical features.
The continent has three major mountain ranges: the Rocky Mountains in the west, the Appalachian Mountains in the east, and the Sierra Madre in Mexico. The Rocky Mountains expand from Alaska in the north to New Mexico in the south, and they are the tallest range in North America, with peaks reaching over 14,000 feet. The Appalachian Mountains run from Newfoundland and Labrador in Canada to Alabama in the United States, and they are much older than the Rocky Mountains, with peaks reaching up to 6,000 feet. The Sierra Madre runs down the west coast of Mexico and comprises several ranges, counting the Sierra Madre Oriental and the Sierra Madre Occidental.
North America is additionally home to several major streams, counting the Mississippi River, the Missouri River, the Colorado River, and the Mackenzie River. The Mississippi River is the biggest river system in North America and is the fourth-longest river in the world, extending over 2,300 miles from its source in Minnesota to its mouth in the Gulf of Mexico. The Missouri River is the longest river in North America, stretching over 2,300 miles from its source in Montana to its intersection with the Mississippi River in Missouri. The Colorado River runs through several western states, counting Colorado, Utah, and Arizona, and is popular for its picturesque canyons and whitewater rapids.
North America also has a few expansive bodies of water, counting the Great Lakes, the Gulf of Mexico, and the Arctic Ocean. The Great Lakes are the biggest freshwater system in the world, consisting of five interconnected lakes (Superior, Michigan, Huron, Erie, and Ontario) and covering over 94,000 square miles. The Gulf of Mexico is an expansive body of water located between Mexico and the United States, and it is known for its plenteous marine life, counting angel, shrimp, and oysters. The Arctic Ocean is located to the north of North America and is secured in ice for much of the year, making it difficult to access.
North America has a diverse range of climates, from the tropical rainforests of Central America to the subarctic tundra of Canada. The southern part of the landmass, including Mexico and the Caribbean, encompasses a tropical climate, with tall temperatures and high humidity. The central portion of the continent features a calm climate, with warm summers and cool winters, while the northern portion of the landmass has a subarctic climate, with long, cold winters and short, cool summers.
