Barnala district is one of the 23 districts of the Punjab state in India, Barnala became a district on 19 November 2006.
The Barnala district has two sub-divisions Barnala and Tapa, three sub-tehsils Tapa, Bhadaur, Dhanaula, and three blocks Barnala, Sehna, and Mehal Kalan.
Barnala was named after Baba Ala Singh, who was a Misl Jathedar of Phulkian Misl. At one time Barnala was a part of Patiala territory which was set up by Baba Ala Singh in 1719.
He moreover laid the establishment of Patiala two hundred fifty-two years ago. The place has been purified by the visit of Guru Teg Bahadur ji, the ninth Sikh Guru. Gurudwara Patshahi Naumi stands in the very place where Guruji used to think amid his remaining at Sekha.
