Chennai Metro Rail, the pioneering Metro Rail System in India, has transformed urban connectivity in the city with its innovative design. In its First Phase, the metro system stands out as the first in the country to seamlessly connect Railway Terminals, Bus Terminals, and the Airport. Boasting state-of-the-art infrastructure and incorporating last-mile connectivity measures, Chennai Metro Rail spans 54 kilometers and encompasses 41 Metro Stations.
Chennai Metro Rail network is divided into the Blue Line, stretching 23.085 km from Washermanpet to Airport, and the Green Line, covering 21.961 km from Puratchi Thalaivar Dr. M. G. Ramachandran Central to St. Thomas Mount. Notably, Phase I, covering 45 km with 32 Metro Stations (13 Elevated and 19 Underground), was completed at a cost of ₹18380 Crores. Arignar Anna Alandur Metro (Elevated) and Puratchi Thalaivar Dr. M. G. Ramachandran Central Metro (Underground) serve as interchange points, enhancing passenger convenience. Additionally, the Blue Line has been extended by 9.05 kilometers from Washermanpet to Wimco Nagar, featuring 9 Metro Stations, including 7 Elevated and 2 Underground Stations.
This extension, completed at a cost of ₹3770 Crores, further connects key transportation hubs, railway stations, ports, shopping malls, government offices, and hospitals. Notably, the Phase I of the CMRL project stands as a groundbreaking initiative, being the first in India to provide a direct connection to the airport in its initial phase.
