It was established on March 16, 1946, after being separated from the Gorakhpur District. The name “Deoria” is believed to be derived from “Devaranya” or “Devpuria,” with the district named after its headquarters.

The term “Deoria” generally signifies a place with temples, reflecting the presence of significant temples in the area.

The district covers an area of 2,500 square kilometers and has a population of 3,100,946 as per the 2011 census.

It has a population density of 1,220 inhabitants per square kilometer, with a sex ratio of 1,013 females for every 1,000 males and a literacy rate of 73.53%.

The district is surrounded by Kushinagar in the north, Gopalganj and Siwan districts of Bihar in the east, Mau and Ballia districts in the south, and Gorakhpur district in the west.
