It was formed in 1962 out of the four former colonies Pondicherry, Karaikal, Yanam, and Mahe. The territory has a richly cosmopolitan culture, with people speaking French, English, Tamil, Telugu, and Malayalam.

Hindus form the majority in all four regions, while Muslims are an important minority in Karaikal, Mahe, and Yanam, and Christians are numerous in Puducherry.

The territory is known for its sophisticated and cheerful people, who enjoy celebrating festivals such as Pongal, Dusshehra, Diwali, Christmas, Easter, Bastille Day, and the Villanur Temple car festival.

The main languages spoken in Puducherry are Dravidian languages like Malayalam, Tamil, and Telugu, as well as English and French. The territory is also known for its delicious cuisine, which includes Tamil, Gujarati, Telugu, Bengali, Malayalam, and French food.

Puducherry is governed by a lieutenant governor who is advised by a chief minister and a Council of Ministers. The jurisdiction of the Madras High Court extends over the union territory.

Puducherry contains the Hindu ashram of the philosopher Sri Aurobindo as well as Auroville, the international township and study center that was named for him.

The Romain Rolland Public Library houses some rare French volumes. The territory has a total area of 190 square miles and a population of 1,244,464 as of 2011.
